Elder Care Services

Please contact the benefits counselors at the Area Agency on Aging for additional assistance in addressing recovery needs.  The calls are triaged and interdisciplinary assessment teams are being sent out based on the urgency and severity of the needs.  Individuals can call (713) 794-9001 to speak to a benefits counselor.

Please see the ATTACHED list of clinics that are open or that have a firm opening  date.  Please remember that the list of all safety-net clinics, even those not yet open, can be found at http://www.gatewaytocare.org/clinics.htm.

  • The Emergency Prescription Assistance Program did not end on 9/22/08 as stated in Update #3.  Per a call to CMS, there is no end date established at this time, and their website has not been updated yet.  This will provide a one-time 30-day supply of medications to treat acute conditions and replace maintenance prescription drugs or medical equipment lost as a direct result of Hurricane Ike.
     

  • Houston Center for Independent Living is back in their offices and are ready to assist persons with disabilities.  Their phone number is 713.974.4621.
     

  • Ibn Sina Community Clinic (S. Wilcrest location) is dedicating 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday exclusively to Hurricane Ike affected families.  Please call 281-977-7462 for this medical consultation at no charge.
     

  • The Harris County Hospital District Gulfgate and Northwest Health Centers, Jerry Neal and Southside school-based clinics and the East Mount Houston Eligibility Center remain closed.  All Patients can be seen at any available CHP health center. 
     

  • The Houston Area Immunization Partnership is reminding people that if immunization information for Houston Area children displaced by Hurricane Ike is available through ImmTrac and the Houston Harris County Immunization Registry (HHCIR).  They caution that both systems should be accessed since there is  information in HHCIR not yet been incorporated into ImmTrac due to differences in consent requirements.   Updates will be available through www.immunizehouston.org.

Eye Care

 

Complete eye exams and corrective lenses are provided at low or no cost at La Nueva Casa de Amigos Optometry Clinic, located just past the University of Houston (UH) Downtown, 1809 Main Street.  The clinic is run by UH in conjunction with the City and Hospital District operations at "Las Dos Casas".
